The Central European climate imposes special requirements concerning the protection of industrial transferring appliances in chemical plants, refineries, petrochemical and other plants in order to protect them from low temperatures. This kind of protection is guaranteed by steam tracing system, which is based on the trace lines.
Steam tracing systems protect industrial plants from the freezing or cooling of the flowing product. A steam tracing system also ensures the right viscosity of the flowing medium at such a level that it protects against any unwanted rise of the flow resistance.
In the picture we can see a typical loop of the steam tracing system with some steam tracers. The temperature decrease should be prevented by the steam which heats a technological pipeline inside which there is some chemical product. Pressure of the heating steam (steam saturation temperature) is set on the basis of the minimum required product temperature for technological appliances.
THE IDEA OF THE STEAM TRACING SYSTEM.
a production engineer sets the required product temperature;
the maximum operating level is set, in the way that the steam saturation temperature should be higher than the product temperature;
steam tracing system is designed for the steam flow rate of the order of 20 m/s;
the length of the steam tracer should not exceed 90 m for the pipe's dimension d=25 mm;
the optimum length of the heating loop from steam distribution collector to condensate collection collector should be between 60 - 80 m ;
applied dimensions for steam tracers are DN15, DN20, DN25;
a compensation system for the steam tracers should be foreseen;
the number of the steam tracers is calculated, you can for example use the Zamkon ' s computer program.
Practical side of the steam tracing system's construction is based on assembling many steam tracer sections at the same time. For this purpose steam distributors are installed on the steam pipelines - to ensure the correct steam distribution, as well as condensate collectors which carry away the condensate to the condensate outlet pipeline. A steam trap series is installed on the condensate collectors. This kind of solution ensures an easy access to every drainage point as well as simplicity of the control and servicing.
Modern steam distribution stations (RFM) and condensate collection stations (ZFM) produced by Zamkon are currently installed on the steam heated pipeline systems. From the main steam pipeline, through the steam distribution station, steam is distributed to the individual steam tracers installed along the heated pipelines. The condensate from the steam tracers resulting from the steam condensation after several tens of meters gets to the main condensate collection pipeline through the condensate collection station ( ZFM).Condensate collection stations with thermostatic steam traps in an isolation station Condensate collection station with inverted bucket steam traps without isolation
Steam distribution station without isolation
There are two types of steam traps used in steam tracing systems:
inverted bucket steam traps in a whole range of pressures
thermostatic (bimetallic) steam traps only for pressures above 0,4 MPa (for easier servicing of the steam tracing systems, use of bimetallic steam traps with a fluid temperature regulatio is recommended).
Other types of steam traps are not recommended either because of the steam lost and short life or because of large sizes and high price. Until recently the stations were made in a traditional way, from a prefabricated pipe and sockets with stop valves welded to it. It used to take a lot of room on the installation and the stations had a shorter life. RFM and ZFM stations made by Zamkon company are the so-called "the new type stations" where the most important part is the collector with factory-made and built-in cut-off valves. It allows to save up to 50 % of extra space. The collector is made from steel forging modules. It lengthens their life and increases their esthetical aspects which in our days is especially taken into consideration when designing new installations. It is also important that the built -in cut-off valves are replaceable, including valve seats. It allows a quick replacement without the need of either the station or individual elements being disassembled.
Zamkon company offers the above mentioned stations as a complete device ready to be installed at the destination point. It consists of a manifold with valves, drain valves, steam traps, post and steam tracers in accordance with the enclosed figures (fig. land fig. 2).
RFM / ZFM stations and support posts can be modified according to the client's requirements. At present Zamkon is the main company on the Polish market which offers the stations as a set which really helps the contractor in the assembling of the whole steam tracing system. The cost of the new and old type station is comparable.
Final comments:
Design, devices delivery and installation of steam tracing systems are not an easy subject. For that reason it is recommended to entrust their execution to a specialised company.

Inverted bucket steam traps The WZ steam traps are inverted bucket steam traps. They operate thanks to difference in displacement of the float which is filled with condensate or a mixture of steam and water.
Wedge gate valves Wedge gate valves Gate valves are designed for general use pipelines in industrial systems. They can be installed on pipelines In a vertical or horizontal position and operate only when fully open or closed. Medium can flow in both directions. Typically we produce gate valves with hand drive.
